With the professional golf season officially underway, it only seems appropriate to highlight our golf course. The original 18-hole Wexford Course opened in 1983. Following an extensive renovation, led by legendary golfer and respected golf course designer Arnold Palmer, Wexford unveiled its remarkable Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course in 2011. After the renovation, each hole on the par-72 course retained a distinctive and timeless look, while adding numerous risk and reward challenges that require thought, imagination and a well-honed short game. One of the toughest aspects of Bunker Shots is returning the club back to the sand consistently through impact. To practice taking the same amount of sand every time when hitting bunker shots, try the “Line Drill.” Draw a line in the bunker and take your normal bunker stance with your weight leaning into your lead (front) foot.
Start making golf swings, moving down the line as you do. Check to see where your club is connecting with the sand after each swing and ask yourself the following questions:
- Are my divots in the sand starting before, on, or after the line?
- Are my divots consistently starting before, on, or after the line?
The club should contact the sand directly on the line and the divot should follow. Make practice swings in the sand until you see yourself consistently connecting with the sand right on the line. When you find yourself hitting the line consistently, place golf balls in the sand about an inch in front of the line and practice hitting bunker shots. Make sure you are still connecting with the sand right on the line.
When practicing this, you should find yourself hitting consistent bunker shots.

On October 20, 2011, in conjunction with Arnold Palmer’s return to the island for the grand opening of Wexford’s Arnold Palmer Signature Course, Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin proclaimed the day to be “Arnold Palmer Day.”
According to Mayor Laughlin, “Our town and community are committed to excellence in all that we do…and nothing exemplifies this better than Arnold Palmer and Wexford’s new golf course.
That day was incredibly special to all here at Wexford, as we greeted Palmer and welcomed him into our community. As we look back at his life, we cherish the time he spent here, and will cherish those memories for forever.
Hilton Head area PGA Junior Leagues garnered some national attention this week, as Harrison Mancill (representing the Country Club of Hilton Head) and John Berrigan (representing Wexford Plantation, coached by our very own James Scales!) both hit a hole-in-one last Friday on the SAME hole in the Junior League final match at the Country Club of Hilton Head. The two boys, ages 13 and 10, had back-to-back holes in one on the 89-yard, par-3 fifth hole.
According to the National Hole in One Registry, the odds of two players from the same foursome acing the same hole are 17 million to one.
And the winner goes to…
– Best Tennis Club
– Best Racquet Club
– Best Tennis Pro, Patrick Mason
